The beautiful medieval town of Dinan nestles on a hillside overlooking the River Rance, and is still largely surrounded by its ancient fortified walls. The name of Dinan is thought to originate from the Celtic word for hill (dun), coupled with the patron goddess of the town ‘Ahna’, suggesting both the early origins of the town and the strong Celtic links common to Brittany. By 1040, when the town is first recorded, Dinan was already a thriving town, with the earliest Dinan property under the protection of a hilltop castle, as can be seen on the Bayeaux Tapestry. Several interesting and architecturally spectacular buildings have remained to the present day, including the 13th century Jacobins Theatre, St Malo’s church and the Château de Dinan. This strong sense of history led to Dinan’s award as one of only ten places in Brittany designated as a ‘Villes et Pays d’art et d’histoire’ which, in essence, both celebrates and protects the history and cultural heritage of the town.
Today Dinan property can be found in a lively and bustling town that is uniquely picturesque with its ancient buildings and winding, narrow streets. Many of the modern facilities, such as schools, hospitals and supermarkets are on the outskirts of the town, and therefore easily accessible both from Dinan property in the heart of the town and from the surrounding villages.
Of course, Dinan property is not just available in this historic town, but throughout some of Brittany’s most beautiful countryside. Watersports are often popular with owners of Dinan property, with many opportunities for sailing, boating and windsurfing, to name but a few, and some of the best fishing opportunities in the region.
