| The Island of Cyprus | ||
| THE AREA |
The beautiful island of Cyprus lies at the eastern end of the Mediterranean and is about four and a half hours' flying time from London. The island is about 150 miles long and 55 miles wide. It offers a wonderful variety of scenery including the beautiful forested Troodos mountains which rise to 1,951 metres above sea level, attractive sandy beaches and well-cultivated land where vines, oranges, lemons, bananas, nuts, olives and many other crops are grown.The capital of Cyprus is Nicosia which lies roughly in the centre of the island and is split partly into the northern sector of Cyprus which covers the north east of the island. The town is mainly a commercial one and most holidaymakers and retired people tend to go to other areas of the island. The main international airport is at Larnaca where there is a port and marina. The main holiday town is Limassol which offers a variety of good hotels, beaches, shops and night life, along with an old city centre. In the south west is the quiet town of Paphos with an ancient port, a small local fishing fleet and many sites of interest to the historian. There is a second international airport at Paphos. About 26 miles east of Larnaca, just west of Famagusta, lies Ayia Napa. This is a modern town sited in the market garden area of Cyprus where a feature are the windmills built to pump up water for irrigation. Here there are good beaches, many restaurants, shops and a small harbour. |
| ACTIVITIES |
|
For those wanting active holidays or pastimes, it is possible to ski for two or three months in most winters in the Troodos mountains and there are many tennis courts, a good choice of aquatic sports including scuba diving and water skiing, and riding. For those interested in ancient history, there is a tremendous range of sites and monuments to view and shortly it is hoped that the ancient town of Amathus just east of Limassol will be excavated and the old port under the sea will be exposed to provide an unique example of maritime history. |
