| THE AREA |
The ancient kingdom of Aquitaine is today represented by the five Departments of the Gironde, Dordogne, Landes, Pyrenees Atlantiques and the Lot et Garonne.Located at the intersection of the Greenwich meridian and the 45th parallel it is assured both sunny summers and mild winters. From the sand dunes of the Atlantic coast to the foothills of the Pyrenees, the forest of the Landes to the splendour of the Dordogne valley, it offers a rich variety and an abundance of natural beauty. For many the sandy beaches from Biarritz to Bordeaux are the attraction, while others seek the lakes set in the forests of Les Landes. The rich culture of the Basque country, or the vineyards of Medoc and the Bordelais, the pre-historic sites of the Dordogne valley and the fortified bastide towns with their Romanesque churches all combine to offer an extensive variety of pleasures for both the holiday maker or the permanent resident. |

A network of freeways crosses the area and provide fast access by road to Bordeaux (350 miles from Paris) and Biarritz, Toulouse and the Mediterranean. The TGV high speed train service from Paris to Bordeaux has scheduled services every day with a three hour journey, and London or Brussels is just seven hours away. Bordeaux is a major sea port and cruise ships are frequent visitors. |
