The AreaThe mountain village of Cómpeta nestles in the mid slopes of the Sierra Almijara mountains at 636 metres above sea level. It is of stunning beauty with narrow streets and passages, an attractive central square, with church, shops, bars and restaurants. The views of the sea and sunset over the mountains provide constant competition as to what to admire first. It is surrounded by the smaller villages of Sayalonga, Canillas de Albaida and Arches. Torrox is further down on the lower slopes only 4kms from the sea. These white washed villages are surrounded by a wildlife reserve where mountain goats wander freely and eagles soar over the mountains. The higher peaks are snowcapped in winter. It is a stunningly beautiful setting. All of the larger villages are fully equipped with supermarkets, banks, modern facilities and services which have been tastefully integrated to respect the historic architecture. The climate is the best in Europe, being warm and sunny all year round. Avocados, custard apples and mango trees thrive alongside grape vines, olives and almonds. When in blossom they form a patchwork of different colours over the valley and hills. ActivitiesDuring the winter excellent snow skiing can be enjoyed at Sierra Nevada, only 110kms away. Málaga is the Provincial capital and offers superb cultural and shopping facilities. The sandy beaches and coastal resorts of Axarquía are only a short drive away with the nearest championship golf course at Añoreta near Rincón de la Victoria being only 35kms away. There are many locally provided activities including horse trekking, tennis, swimming, hiking and art and photography schools. Annual carnivals and fiestas, usually saints days, provide many opportunities for all ages to join in the fun with the friendly local people.
