The Italian Riviera has a great diversity of coastline, vegetation and inhabitants. Visitors are captivated by the area's fascinating and vivid history as well as the beauty of the landscape.
Liguria is one of the smallest regions of Italy and one of the most beautiful. Formerly a haven of Pirates, who would shelter their ships amongst the narrow rocky inlets, it has since become a mecca, not only for the rich and famous, but also for those wishing a unique sort of beach vacation. The deep water ports that once held Pirate vessels, now hold deluxe yachts from all over the world.
The largest town in Liguria is the port of Genoa. Its supremacy as ruler of the seas had already been established as early as the 11th century. During its heyday Genoa attracted many artists; among them Rubens, Van Dyck and Puget. Today, Italy's greatest seaport is a city of diversity; great palaces sit side by side with humble dwellings. It still holds a majestic position spread out over the mountains and certainly merits a visit.
Be sure to visit the Cinque Terre, five secluded fishing villages that are fast becoming one of Italy's star attractions. Virtually inaccessible by road but are spectacular to visit by foot, each of the Cinque Terre towns has something different to offer.
On the coast, stylish resorts such as Portofino jostle with quaint old seaside towns, like Santa Margherita and Camogli.
The authentic character of the region can still be found in the quiet corners of certain seaside villages or in the rare coves still unaltered by the hands of man.
Behind Sanremo alternative itineraries touch the medieval villages of Taggia and Triora; Pigna with its characteristic chibi (alleys) surrounded by olive groves; Apricale, a medieval village magnificently facing south; Dolceacqua, with the Doria castle and vineyards. Farther north, on the slopes of Mount Saccarello lies Monesi, a winter sports resort.
