The coastal and geographical position of Javea has ensured its history has been long and rich. The oldest human traces have been dated to about 16,000 BC and the history remains unbroken through Roman, Visigoth, Muslim and Mediaeval periods until modern times. It is a town with many festivals during the year and with a diverse culinary heritage, particularly seafood and traditional Spanish dishes.Javea Areas Javea is dominated by the Montgo natural park which reaches to 758m high and encompasses approximately 2000 hectares and which was used for shelter by early settlers. It is rich in wildlife and archaeology. It protects the normally warm climate of Javea from the cold winds of winter and ensures that the summer heat is not overbearing by producing breezes. The old town of Javea retains a historic centre, characterised by narrow streets and gothic buildings built from the local stone. The old walls which formerly surrounded the town on three sides were demolished in 1873.
