Montauban is a busy market town spread over both banks of the River Tarn. Built as a fortified town in the 12th century it was converted into a protestant stronghold during the religion wars. The present town has 17th century buildings and most of the houses are built in the distinctive pink brick which may be seen throughout the town. The Pont Vieux which spans the Tarn with seven arches dates from the 14th century, near the bridge is one of the town’s most important buildings: the Ingres Museum which contains drawings by Ingres and works by the sculptor Bourdelle.
Local activities include water parks, quad biking, horse riding, canoeing, ballooning, flying and rafting. The Pyrénées mountains are about 90 minute’s drive away with its beautiful villages, scenery and skiing in winter.
