Marbella: Modern Culture Meets The Old Town

Marbella is a popular Spanish destination that attracts a variety of tourist types who are seeking an electric atmosphere to soak up the sun. However, it is not just its modern vibrancy and desirable climate that attracts holidaymakers, the quaint old town and quintessential culture is something to be admired. So, if you are looking for a destination that has the best of both worlds, Marbella is the place for you.

Perhaps the main reason why many holidaymakers head to the luxurious resort of Marbella is the countless, palm-tree fringed beaches. Marbella offers 23 beaches in total, six of them attained Blue Flag status. For those who want a little more excitement than lounging by the shore can enjoy a range of watersports that include kayaking, sailing and paragliding.

Whilst the daytimes are spent relaxing, the evenings are vibrant. Holidaymakers are spoilt for choice with a range of upmarket clubs and bars. The buzzing nightlife attracts many of the rich and famous to stay in Marbella to the lavish nightclubs of the Golden Mile.

However, Marbella is not just a modern destination for the young and rich. Many historians believe Marbella was inhabited as early as the 7th century. The area was heavily influenced by the Romans, with numerous archaeological sites and buildings still present today. Visitors who enjoy history will enjoy the Guadalmina Thermal Baths and the mosaics located in the Roman Villa in Rio Verde, but perhaps one of the most iconic places to marvel Marbella’s history is in the Old Town.

Known as the Casco Antiguo in Spanish, the Old Town is arguably Marbella’s best hidden gem and a true contrast to the rest of Marbella. The marvelous town is a sight that often gets overlooked by many of Marbella’s visitors who usually spend the entirety of their holiday on the sandy beaches. However, we highly recommend you tear yourself from the shore to explore the Old Town in the centre of town. Full of ancient architecture along the cobbled streets, you can enjoy the art galleries, boutique shops, eateries and bars located here.

In the heart of the Old Town is a quintessential Andalucian square decorated with orange trees and tropical plants. Partake in a relaxing afternoon here sat at one of the many traditional Spanish cafés with a glass of local wine. If you want to make an evening of it, you can enjoy a peaceful night sipping on cocktails in the centre of this luxury holiday resort.
