This is a commune whose territory extends over four kilometres, along the right bank of the Seine and in the wooded massif of the Hautil at the southern limit of the French Vexin. It also includes an island in the Seine, the Ile de Vaux, opposite Verneuil-sur-Seine.
In 1999, the built-up urban area represented 21% of the territory, the non-built-up area 12% and the rural area 67% of the surface area of the commune. The commune borders Evecquemont to the west, Menucourt and Boisemont to the north, Triel-sur-Seine to the east and, separated by the Seine, Verneuil-sur-Seine to the south. The site has been inhabited since Paleolithic times.
The foundation of the village of Vaux goes back to a very remote period, its existence is attested around the year 250 under the consulship of Decius and Gratus, by the legend of Saint Nicaise : "Accompanied by the priest Quirinus and the deacon Scuniculus, Nicaise had resolved to bring the light of the Gospel to the north of Gaul where important cities were flourishing. It was in a village in the Vexin that Nicaise began his preaching.
Near the village of Vaux, a horrible snake had made its home in a cave from which a fountain sprang, whose waters, poisoned by this foul neighbourhood, were now a hotbed of infection. The arrival of Nicaise was greeted with the blessings of all the poor inhabitants of the country. Full of faith in the divine protection, the minister of Christ sent to the dragon's lair his disciple Quirinus, who subdued the monster under his command and brought it to Saint Nicaise, bound with his stole. All the inhabitants, confounded with admiration, prostrated themselves and asked to embrace the new religion. 318 people were baptized at the dragon's fountain itself, which is now clear and healthy as it once was. This place is the fountain, the Saint Nicaise washhouse.
